After the filmmakers cast a wide net, employing 13 casting directors and taking eight months to find their Pocahontas, the historic figure who stands at the center of Terrence Malick’s “The New World,” Kilcher landed the role of the Powhatan princess after having just turned 14 (the real Pocahontas was between 10 and 12 when the English explorers first touched down in Virginia in 1607).
Kilcher credits the production research team, along with her own extensive reading, in helping her decipher who the real Pocahontas was — not an easy feat given the fact that most of what we know about her was through the colonists’ accounts, since Native Americans relied on oral history.
When Kilcher was two years old, she and her mother moved to Kapaa, Hawaii, where her brother Kainoa was born.
